They may not be quite as good as an expensive custom hi-fi set up, but for the money, these speakers are hard to beat for listening to music while in front of a computer. The way the Soundsticks play music is pretty good, too. One thing I really like about Harman Kardon’s Soundsticks is how they lend real heft to the warning and alerts sounds that a computer makes and that you might ordinarily miss if they’re playing on the tiny little speakers built into most desktops. Of course, there’s always the option of putting the subwoofer on a desk because it’s certainly pretty enough to deserve a chunk of desk real estate and makes for an excellent talking point… you do need a big desk, though. I’d recommend doing that before a final siting under the desk where it can be forgotten about. The ideal place for the subwoofer is probably under a desk, but that does make things a bit difficult when wanting to adjust the bass setting. The subwoofer on the Soundsticks is a meaty affair with a rotary knob for adjusting the amount of bass you want it to produce. There’s also a Bluetooth version of the Soundsticks if you want to pay a bit extra, but frankly, I’d go for the basic wired model and add a separate Bluetooth receiver later if you decide you want one.case
The third iteration of Harman Kardon’s Soundsticks now use a plain old analog connection terminating in a 3.5mm stereo jack that plugs directly into the soundcard of the computer. The other change from those early Soundsticks is that there’s no longer a USB connection for getting the sound from the computer to the speakers. The blue LED has been replaced with a white light, while the speakers look very similar except for the black donut-shaped speaker stands instead of silver ones, and the new versions now have a much-needed volume control built-into the right-hand Soundstick, with capacitance touch control.
Today’s Soundsticks don’t look a whole lot different from those early Soundsticks. Each satellite Soundstick includes four one-inch drivers for the mid and treble ranges.
